I believe renting a car is one of the best ideas while on vacation. I’m usually a budget traveler and try to do everything as cheap as possible, but renting a car is something I will almost always splurge on. Yes, there are other ways to get around, like bus, taxi, etc. if you can’t seem to spend the money on a car, don’t feel comfortable driving in a foreign place, or don’t plan to leave the hotel often. Those options are completely fine, but not for me.

The first reason why I would recommend getting a car is because of the freedom. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want. You don’t have to wait for a bus or taxi to arrive, you can just go when you’re ready. The second reason is because you may want to travel a little farther, especially if you’re an explorer like me. An hour drive on a bus can be exhausting and longer with extra stops and an hour drive in a taxi can cost quite a bit, but in a car you’re more comfortable and probably saving money if you plan to go far often. The last reason is for the space. Who wants to carry luggage or snorkel gear on a bus? I know I wouldn’t! Buses can be overcrowded enough and adding your stuff to the list makes it much worse, plus it’s harder to find a spot. Also, some taxis are limited on the number of luggage or people you can have in your group, but with a car you can make sure to rent the correct size that you will need.

These are all the reasons why I will be renting a car in most areas. I truly feel you can explore more of the place you’re visiting with a car. I highly suggest if you choose this type of transportation, that you do your research on where to rent to find the best deals and the best quality! Unfortunately, not all rentals or companies are good. If I rent a car and like the company, I will recommend them in my trip guides for those who aren’t sure where to rent from at those places. I’d also like to mention that it’s important to look up and become familiar with maps, road signs, and road rules of the place you’re visiting because you don’t want to get lost or get into an accident. Lastly, I understand not everyone is able to rent a car and some places cars aren’t needed to get around. Again, I would advise you to research the area and find the best option for yourself!

What’s your favorite way to get around when on vacation or traveling? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, so comment below!

  1. I think that renting a car is a great idea as well; however, when I travel to bigger cities I love to travel by train or subway. The reason for this is because I am from a small town (as you know) and we do not really have that method of transportation readily available. It is just a neat experience to travel differently! I also love taking Uber.

Thus said, I also love renting cars as well because as you said, it’s nice to get out and go when you want to leave! Love the blog! 🙂

    1. That’s a great point! I suppose I should have mentioned that I wasn’t talking about the big cities for car rentals. Cities definitely have better options for getting around that won’t cost a lot, especially since you’re probably not going far. Plus in-city driving is not always fun. Thanks for bringing that up though! Uber can be great too if you’re not going far or have a group of people. I definitely love all the different options for transportation. It makes it a lot easier to choose what’s best for you. Thanks for your insight and support! I appreciate it!! 😊❤

  2. Totally agree the “why’s” of car rental when traveling. You can’t possibly find the real identity of a destination without meeting locals and getting off the beaten path. Love your website!
